Yesterday, I received a long-anticipated email from TGC. You know that feeling of walking out to the mailbox on your birthday, just waiting to see the cash awaiting you inside? You have a little extra spring in your step! That was me yesterday as I found out where I will be placed in Indonesia. I will be located in Central Java (Jawa Tengah), Indonesia, in the town of Purwokerto. Looks like it's a middle school! Also received my very important flight information: On July 13, I'm flying out of Chicago with some fellow Illinoisans, meeting up with the TGC Indonesia crew at George Bush Airport in Houston, and then flying to Tokyo for a quick 4-hour layover. Then it's on to Jakarta! I've never flown to East Asia before- not sure how my body is going to take the time/date changes, but I can't wait to find out! And it's going to be extremely difficult to NOT venture out and explore Tokyo, but I'll just have to come back sometime to check it out! I also found out that I'll be traveling with a fellow history guy, a middle school teacher named Matt from Farmington Hills, MI. We've got a lot in common: we love technology in education a little too much, each of us added a newborn in the past 3 months, and we both love adventure. Always great to have a solid travel bud! In the meantime, I've got lots to do. Visa application for Indonesia. Gifts to purchase for the kids at the school in Central Java. And research: I'm going to continue devouring anything and everything related to Indonesia. Books. DVDs. GlobeTrekker. Anthony Bourdain videos. It's going to be a great summer!
