Well, a lot has happened since my last post. My visa was approved (after about 5 hours of taking photos, scanning documents, and filling out forms) and I'm good to go. I've purchased a bunch of gifts for the kids in Indonesia- found a great deal online for USA friendship bracelets and sticky hands (I loved those as a kid!!). Oh, and we also moved across the country. I took a new teaching position in Bunker Hill, Illinois, a small town about 40 miles northeast of St. Louis, MO. In the past week, my wife and our three kids have: 1) Visited the beach for the last time (so long, San Diego- we'll miss you); 2) Packed our entire house into boxes; 3) Said goodbye to our foreign exchange student, Hai, from Vietnam; 4) Drove a moving truck 2,000 miles east; and 5) Slept in a different bed for a week straight. It's been one crazy summer so far, and in fact, I'll have spent more days traveling this summer than not! Wow.
Anyway, back to Indonesia. We were asked by TGC to formulate a guiding, overarching question for our trip. After much thought and contemplation, my guiding question is this: To what extent is character education emphasized and taught in Indonesian schools, and how does the Islamic faith play a role in that process? What are the general academic and behavioral expectations of students and staff? As our departure date gets closer, I'll try to update this weekly now.
